“Are prediction markets legal in the UK?” is too broad for a yes-or-no answer. A platform’s label does not decide its regulatory category. The particular contract, operator, customer location and manner of offering the product all matter. Great Britain and Northern Ireland can also differ in regulatory detail; this guide is mainly about Great Britain.
What the UK regulator actually says
In its February 2026 note, the Gambling Commission said commercial products that meet the definition of gambling under UK legislation must be licensed and regulated by it. Subject to a provider’s business model, it said current prediction-market products offered in Great Britain would appear to fit the betting-intermediary definition, comparable in core aspects to a betting exchange. The Commission also said operators not licensed in Great Britain should not target or transact with GB consumers.
The Commission separately identifies spread betting as an FCA-regulated exception and says financial-services products, rather than gambling facilities, are within the FCA’s remit. That distinction is about actual substance, not whether an app calls an activity “trading”. The FCA Register and Gambling Commission public register are starting points for checking named entities, but a register entry alone does not prove that every advertised product is approved for you.
Availability is a separate question
An operator may run a US product with US eligibility while offering a different service elsewhere. Coinbase’s US prediction product says it is for US residents; Polymarket’s help page lists the United Kingdom as restricted. Do not infer UK access from a brand’s general UK presence, an app-store listing, a VPN or a search snippet. Confirm the current terms of the exact product and your location. Never try to bypass geographic restrictions.
A practical checking list
- Identify the legal operator and the specific product, not just the brand name.
- Read current country, age, identity and location conditions.
- Check the relevant regulator register and the operator’s own market rules.
- Understand deposits, withdrawals, costs, dispute handling and safer-participation tools.
- For an individual legal or tax interpretation, speak to a suitably qualified professional.
Why US statistics need a UK label
Our research hub covers prediction markets using mostly US studies and platform data. A high-volume US product, a survey of American adults or a US court case does not change the UK eligibility checks above. Read global trading statistics as evidence about the markets measured, not as proof that they are offered in Britain.
